Country Guitar – The Constant in Country Music

country musicAmong all the different genres of music available today, country music still remains one of the most popular. Its roots stemming from the immigrants in the Maritime Provinces and the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North America, it has spread across countries far and wide. The distinct sound and melody of country, accompanied with the image of a performer with a cowboy hat, boots, and his country guitar strapped across his body is an image everyone, regardless of age, is familiar with.

You may associate the acoustic or steel guitar immediately to the country genre but its roots were slightly different. The original musical instruments that were most commonly used for this type of music were the Irish fiddle, the German dulcimer, the Italian mandolin, the Spanish guitar, and the West African banjo. country musicIt has been around for decades, growing back in the 1920′s with such artists as ‘Eck” Robertson and Jimmie Rodgers, but this has come far since them, in leaps and bounds and has become unrecognizable to some and unpalatable to others. Instrumental
Is it the instruments? Traditionally it had fiddles and even high spirited instrumentals, and later slow simple chords, but if that makes, then it definitely rules out almost all the top Country artists on today’s top ten, and even many older artists.

Lyrics
Traditionally this music had very recognizable lyrics. The song would tell a distinctive story, of loss, pain and life lessons, this set it aside from many other genres of music, but this ‘old’ style seems lost in today’s modern world, and even the ‘story telling’ lyrics seem to be lost among more commercial type songs.
